ABOUT INSIDE OUT EDUCATION

Since 2011, more than a third of all Inside Out Project Group Actions around the world happen in education settings, with students from age 3 to 21. The project has naturally transferred into the teaching environment as it allows educators and students to present subject matters in a playful and engaging way. Inside Out Group Actions honor diversity and boost kids and young adults self-confidence through self-expression.

The Inside Out team has been focusing its efforts on bringing the project to as many schools and youth organizations as possible. We help educators and students use Inside Out as a tool to empower their young participants to use their voice to speak up about topics they care about.

We encourage educators and students to create Actions with participants of all ages and around any subject matter.

What can we do together?

WORKSHOPS

Since March of 2021, The Inside Out Team has been speaking to classrooms all over the world over video chat. During these encounters, the Team tells the students a little bit about the Inside Out Project and how it came to be but the main focus is to learn about their Action from the students’ perspective;

- What it is about?
- What they like about creating an Action?
- What they hope to accomplish?

The calls are adapted to the age of the students, how far along they are in the process and the theme of their Action. Once you have started your process of creating an Action, we can also speak to your class!

BACK2SCHOOL

Back2School is an initiative that was born from the creation of two Inside Out Photo Booth trucks in 2013. Thanks to these roaming photographic cabins, the NYC based team is able to bring the project directly to schools in NYC and its surrounding boroughs. Portrait of students are captured at the back of the truck and come out instantaneously in a large format print on the side of the cabin. While the students are being photographed, the team pastes the portraits on a designated wall of the school.

The Photo Booth trucks also traveled across the country to California, visiting a series of schools that wished to make a bold, visual statement about their commitment to leveraging arts for educational equity. From California’s southern border to its northern coast, students transformed campus walls into celebratory messages of creativity, community, and identity — bringing the magic of teaching and learning through the arts from the Inside… Out!

Since the inception of this initiative, the Photo Booths have visited more than 30 schools and pasted over 5,000 posters.

CURRICULUM

With the help of educators, the Inside Out team has created a curriculum to give future Group Leaders ideas on how to use their Action for educational purposes. It contains activities to be adapted to the participants' age, subject taught, and social context. The Inside Out Project Curriculum brings cross-phase art education into classrooms of all kids and for all ages around the world.

CASE STUDIES

Our Case Studies are an opportunity to learn from fellow educators and students all over the world about how they have engaged students through their Group Action. These Studies allow for participants and leaders to exchange ideas on how to create an Action that fits their unique educational context. Writers are encouraged to share the inspiration behind their Action, how it was incorporated into lessons or programming, and the overall impact of the experience.

Anyone who has participated in an Education Action, whether that be a student, parent, or educator, is invited to write a Case Study. If you’re interested, please email education@insideoutproject.net.
