History reveals that Transgenders were valued for their loyalty and strength during the Mughal Era in the Indo-Pak region. They were placed on high positions at the Mughal palaces and Harems. However their strengths have been converted into weaknesses with the passage of time and Transgenders are among the most deprived communities in this region. Through constant trans-phobic harassing, they have been pushed to live on the edges of society, whilst filling the dirty corners of the social structures.
Like every other country in South Asia, in Pakistan Transgenders are discriminated in every possible way. Starting from job opportunities, social status and basic rights, they are also deprived of the right of living with their very own families. Being transgender is treated as taboo subject, and in many cases, transgender individuals are deprived of their legal rights to marriage, inheritance and a normal burial. Many Pakistani governments have been promising to establish policies and laws for transgender rights protection and transgender activists warily respected the announcements, saying it was a much needed refresher; however that it would barely change their everyday reality.
Despite of all the unequal treatment, Transgenders lead the lives full of dignity and solidarity. They stand together and protect each other where no state laws exist to provide them basic living rights, where no traditions allow them to breathe respectfully. In the most marginalized conditions Transgenders of Pakistan stand tall and pass smiles and happiness to so called Normal people. “SOLIDARITY IN A SCANDALOUS SOCIETY” is a tribute to the smiles and dignity of Transgenders of Pakistan!
