Cape Verde is a small archipelago off the coast of West Africa. Although the country's educational system has made great strides in recent decades, in some areas there is still room for growth in introducing creative thinking to the classroom. Our goal is to combine the efforts of the Inside Out Project with our initiative to encourage Cape Verdean youth to consider what life after high school could be.
Nine high school students in São Filipe, Fogo, responded to an essay prompt on what they wanted to be when they graduated. They wrote about how this decision might impact their lives, families, communities, and culture. To pair with a student photo, we found a Cape Verdean counterpart who had succeeded in each field that the student chose. A goal was that every student would leave the project with a mentor and sense of direction. By the end of the project, they were able to identify with a global movement and tell their stories to not only community members but to the country as a whole through the local news.
