The Excellence Project strives to challenge negative bias and values multiple perspectives. Essentially, this is a storytelling project and the story it is telling is of Lincoln’s identity as an immigrant resettlement city and the strengths that come with diversity. The images and stories created by students will include people of different cultures, religions, abilities, genders and socioeconomic backgrounds. The most effective way to combat negative bias is contact. This project literally puts a face on different people in our community and celebrates each story with a focus on how it contributes to a stronger community. The bigger context in our country at this time is increasing polarization of beliefs and intolerance while at the same time, we are becoming an increasingly interdependent world. The humanities have an essential role to play in negotiating our way thoughtfully through these cultural transitions and this project does so with the optimism, hope and promise of youth.
