Inside Out's 2023 Wrap Up!

What a year we’ve had! From covering the outside of the Taipei City Hall to seeing acrobats fly over an installation in Argentina, our community continues to amaze us! This year the Project embraced a new mission—recording the stories of participants to further amplify community voices. Plus, group leaders brought the Project to new countries! A huge thank you to everyone who helped bring public art to their community and lent their face to the Inside Out Project. You have made this year truly unforgettable!

In 2023, 24 Photobooth Actions took place around the world... with our first ever Photobooth Action in Taiwan! Our Photobooth also visited Brazil, Switzerland, Albania, Ukraine, Spain, England, Germany, Italy, the US, and France!

“Inside Out Taiwan - Born Free 生而自由” • Taipei, Taiwan • October 2023 

This fall, more than 1,500 participants stepped into our Photobooth as we visited six different locations in Taipei for the Action “Inside Out Taiwan - Born Free 生而自由‘. For our final stop, the Photobooth parked outside of Taipei City Hall for 12 hours of non-stop Action during Nuit Blanche Taipei 2023. Under the rallying cry of ‘Time to Rise Up!’ in the heart of Taiwan, this Action broadcasted the people’s commitment to democracy and freedom worldwide with several installations across the city and a final massive pasting forming the words 自由 “FREE” on the City Hall square.

Reaching new horizons!
In 2023, we were happy to welcome two new countries to the Inside Out Project Community: Burundi and South Sudan!

“Unis pour la Paix” • Bujumbara, Burundi • September 2023 

On the International Day of Peace, the Group Action "United for Peace" illuminated the challenges faced by millions of refugees and displaced individuals worldwide through an impactful installation featuring 289 portraits of refugees currently in Burundi. This Action united refugees, returnees, and individuals dedicated to embracing these communities across various districts of Bujumbura.

“Peace Begins with Me” • Juba, South Sudan • May 2023 

South Sudan joined our list of participating countries during the global multi-city Action “Peace Begins With Me” This Action celebrated the community of peacekeepers who have helped countries navigate the difficult path from war to peace. With installations across New York City, Abyei, Cyprus, Jerusalem, South Sudan, and Normandy, this Action shows the powerful bonds Actions create between communities around the world.

Thinking outside the box… 
In 2023 Inside Out Actions reached new heights! Group Leaders around the world gathered their communities to create spectacular installations. The Action “Homenaje a los Voluntarios” covered the Silos of the Rosario Museum of Contemporary Art with more than 2,500 portraits of volunteers from the local food bank. During the grand opening of the installation, acrobats performed suspended in the air on the illuminated facade of the building, creating a showstopping intervention.

And within THE BOX!  
Inspired by the Inside Out Project, Group Leader Sebastian Jung from Germany developed a mobile miniature Photobooth that fits into a standard food transport backpack. For Kiosk Day, he biked around Dusseldorf with one objective in mind: celebrating the kiosk owners of the city. Each participant was invited to pop their head into the bag and pose in front of a mini version of the Inside Out backdrop for their close-up. This Action created space for community discussion and exchange, presenting kiosk owners in a new, more personal way within their neighborhood.

Turning Classrooms Inside Out!
This summer, students transformed their schools with over 100 Actions worldwide. Education Actions this year raised the bar with massive installations. In the US, an art teacher in Michigan photographed nearly 1,000 students aged K-12! The Group Action "We Are Kalamazoo Artists", invited students tp express themselves and stand behind the statement: “We are innovators, dreamers, and creators. We are a diverse group of people using art to build bridges and understanding... We create a stronger and healthier future for Kalamazoo.” Dozens of community members gathered to create the show-stopping installation that covered the entire Bronson Park during their annual arts festival.
