Students at PS251Q truly brought the school motto, "Learners Today, Leaders Tomorrow," to life through their impactful action project, #CHANGESTARTSHERE. This initiative highlighted their creativity, empathy, and commitment to making a positive difference in the world. Inspired by the work of French artist JR and his “Inside Out” social impact project, our students were motivated to create their own artwork with a powerful message.
Drawing inspiration from JR’s approach, they chose to tackle important issues such as immigration, acceptance, violence, racism, and other relevant topics that resonate deeply in society today. The art room quickly became a space for thoughtful, deep conversations. Students reflected on the themes they selected for their artwork, sharing personal stories and exploring the challenges and opportunities in the world around them. This project was not just about creating art, it was about using creativity as a tool for raising awareness, challenging injustices, and sparking critical thinking about the issues that affect us all. It was an opportunity for students to connect with each other, express their views, and understand the power of their voices in a meaningful and creative way.
Our student artwork was proudly displayed on our school building alongside portraits of each student. This collaborative exhibition became a powerful visual statement of unity, hope, and the desire for change. It was more than just an art display; it was a community-wide expression of shared values. The school building was transformed into a canvas for important causes, drawing attention to issues that are often overlooked or misunderstood. Students and staff came together to celebrate the diversity of thought, experience, and messages. It was a testament to the fact that in our school, every voice matters, and that art can serve as a powerful tool for advocacy and transformation.
The following day, the school community was able to admire everyone's photo along with the student messages as they entered the school building. They were able to reflect on and appreciate the art that had been displayed. The walls of our school had become a gallery of voices, filled with messages of hope, resilience, and the collective power to bring about change. It was a moment of unity that emphasized the importance of working together toward a common goal.
This event not only strengthened the connections between students and staff but also reaffirmed that our school is a place where all voices are heard and valued. It was a celebration of the belief that every individual has the potential to make a meaningful impact on society, and that the small actions we take today can lead to transformative change tomorrow. It was a day that many will remember as a turning point, when students walked away with the profound realization that YES, WE CAN and that they will continue to find ways to make the world a better, more inclusive place.
