Make Your Portrait Speak!
After twelve years of capturing the faces of people from around the world, Inside Out Photobooths are now embarking on a new mission: recording the diverse voices of participants.
This summer, we started setting up audio recording booths by our Photobooths, giving everyone who gets their portrait taken a platform to speak up about what they care about. Now, after taking their portrait, participants are asked a question unique to the Action they are taking part in. They have complete creative freedom over the way they respond—whether that be sharing a story, an experience, or even a song!

Once collected, this powerful mosaic of voices is available for anyone around the world to hear on our Photobooth website. The first audio collection from our ongoing six-month-long Photobooth Action in Ukraine is already available. Listen here!
“We Are Here” Action webpage with the new audio feature • November 2023
The 4,000+ people who have stepped into our Photobooth at PinchukArtCentre in Kyiv have been the first participants to activate their portraits with their voice. United by a common message, "We Are Here" (МИ ТУТ!), participants shared their own interpretation of what ‘being here’ means to them. Each contribution offers a unique glimpse into someone’s life, providing a singular perspective about a shared reality—in this case, that of war, fear, perseverance, and hope. Darya, a young Ukrainian woman, expressed her feelings about being in her home country:
“I want to escape, I want to just disappear from this reality, I want to find myself in a paradise city where everything is available, where there are no restrictions, no fears, no dangers. [...] And not so long ago I came to the conclusion that if I am still alive, it means that my mission is not yet accomplished. It means that I am still on my way to my key mission in this life. And this means we are here."
