East german women go public

Berlin, Germany

35 Portraits - 2/3 March 2014

After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, the economy of east Germany collapsed, the majority of the companies closed and many people lost their job. Almost half of them won't ever be able to find a stable job again. We want to draw your attention to these women from east Germany who have experienced failure of a system and difficulties of adaptation to a new one. Loosing their job, they also lost their identity and their role in the society. They felt foreign in this new country. Today, many of the women from ex-GDR , especially older women, suffer from poverty, exclusion, and isolation. It has been a real ordeal for them to integrate into this new reality established 20 years ago, and nowadays it is very difficult for them, with their social situations, to follow the rhythm of a quickly changing society. They can feel very disorientated. As well, many women managed to make those obstacles beneficial. They have a very good conscience of their identity and had developed a solidarity network with for exemple the creation of many women centers in Berlin. We portrayed these survival artists.
