Minot is witnessing the greatest decade-long growth since the 1950s, growing by nearly 10,000 people since the 2010 census. Drivers in the Minot economy are agriculture, energy, and the Minot Air Force Base. While the nation suffered an economic downturn, Minot’s economy boomed with oil activity from 2007-2015. However, when residential and commercial property were hard to come by and the influx of people was at unprecedented levels, Minot and many surrounding communities were severely impacted by the 2011 Mouse River flood. Over 4,100 homes in Minot were flooded and 11,000 people were displaced. The next few years brought a local economic downturn as oil prices plummeted. The economic boom and bust, as well as the devastating flood, have taken a toll on community attitudes. Some community members feel disconnected, discouraged, isolated, and deeply wounded; others are cautiously optimistic, craving an identity, and regularly discuss this perpetual issue in smaller, informal groups. It is time for a movement that inspires community-wide involvement, instills a renewed sense of community pride, celebrates our diversity, and builds connections with our neighbors. Our people are at the core of our community. We call Minot home.
