WE ARE MUCH MORE THAN WE THINK, AND WE CAN ACHIEVE MUCH MORE THAN WE CAN IMAGINE
OCTOBER 2013 | 20 PORTRAITS
This group action took place between April and October 2013, in a Portuguese school in a community called Apelação, near Lisbon. This action was made by a group of students that wanted to change the negative perception that society has from Apelação´s kids and community, especially since a video footage of a gun shootout in 2008 “supposedly” between rivalry community’s, that later was proved to be almost nonsense.
And since that day, the Apelação community is only known for that violent incident, and society and even local authorities tend to forget that this community has a much more intellectual, cultural and creative capacity to offer, with they´re dance groups, local artists, singers and writers.
So, inspired by a sentence from a Portuguese Noble Prize Winner called José Saramago, stating that “We are much more that we think, and we can achieve much more than we can imagine…”, the children from Apelação are working to show the world that they are able to be happy, share happiness and make others stop, stare a smile with the positive vibe of small gestures and giggles in this form of artistic expression.
Become a Group Leader by organizing an Inside Out Action in your community. Gather 50 or more participants that stand behind a message you are passionate about and paste your portraits in your community.
