Vías AtreVidas is a statement on the the Machisimo culture in Guatemala, where women's experiences and rights are rarely taken into consideration. Street harassment and sexual assaults on the streets of their own communities are common, with victim-blaming the most common social response to these incidences. Our action lit up the streets of Quetzaltenango for one night, the radiant faces of our Xela locals showing the perpetrators of these crimes that they are not, and will not, be victims. 526 candles were burned during the evening, which took place on 7 November 2012, one for every victim of femicide to date in Guatemala this year.
