We are Jorgina Stamogianni ( Social Anthropologist) and Dimitris Parthimos (Photographer, Human Rights activist) and we want to photograph the local inhabitants of Santorini Island.
Santorini is a very popular summer destination for tourists but also a very harsh and lonely place to live in the winter. Especially the elderly people of the island, they have to lead a very rough life, since they are cut off from the rest of the country due to the few connections with the mainland and have to endure the heavy jobs, the water shortage and to survive in solitude during the long winters without sufficient medical care or amusement.
This year there will be for the first time a Biennale of contemporary art in Santorini and we want to create a parallel Insideout event at that period in order to bring OUT the locals, to engage them in this game and honour their presence in order to pay tribute to those who play an essential role in Santorini’s society and history but who are rarely noticed.
