The individuals portrayed here are active in the movement to end mountaintop removal (MTR). Most of the electricity that we use in Charlottesville comes directly from power plants run on coal taken from their back yards. MTR is a form of mining that blows up the top of a mountain allowing a few workers to remove the coal. The coal company then dumps the rest of the rubble into the valleys, poisoning the environment, destroying the natural habitat and undermining the local economy. MTR is a rapidly growing industry that affects central and southern Appalachia: Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. These activists are defending their homes and their very lives.
