The Basque Country is historically a land of welcome.
In Bayonne in particular, the history of the city is marked by this mixing of populations. A port city with confluences, the sense of welcome takes on a tangible meaning, as is particularly the case in the Saint-Esprit district, on the right bank of the Adour. This old neighborhood has always welcomed populations of migrants and refugees. Everyone has imprinted this district with their cultures and forged the benevolent spirit of this district, far from the folklorizing clichés of the Basque Country.
In 2018, a collective of citizens was born urgently to welcome the Syrian refugees who were arriving in masses. Bayonne is on the path of migrants and welcomes new arrivals every day to PAUSA (*Pause in Basque).
Alongside this harsh reality, the gentrification of the Basque Country is underway and land pressure excludes many people, starting with the most vulnerable.
I founded a festival (Points de Vue) which was born in Saint-Esprit and which helped to break down the barriers that people had of this neighborhood. But the success of this festival will paradoxically favor the exclusion of the most vulnerable.
Through this collective action, I would like to positively support the inclusiveness that makes up the identity of this neighborhood and pay tribute to the residents who bring it to life every day.
