We are part of the Cambridge Youth Program in Cambridge, MA. Our kids in the "Leaders In Action" group came up with their theme, "Masked Insecurities". Masked insecurities was developed to help bring light and discussion to the state of mental health and the many mental diseases/insecurities that people experience. This is especially true for youth, as they are often discriminated against or forced with stereotypes and stigma around the issue. This project will help to voice their insecurities but also show others in the community who share the same or other insecurities to empower themselves instead of remaining silenced. We are trying to start a discussion about positive emotional health instead of continuing the cycle of masking individual insecurities. Through their varied emotions in the photos, we wanted to convey that even though they could be smiling or having another emotion (sad, mad, scared), they could still be masking an insecurity. The point is that you never know what is going on within an individual, especially those things that are often pushed aside and not discussed in order to improve the individual mental state. However, these kids want to show that one can instead embrace their insecurities and improve in positive ways, rather than being afraid to admit and show areas of their lives that they struggle with.
Become a Group Leader by organizing an Inside Out Action in your community. Gather 50 or more participants that stand behind a message you are passionate about and paste your portraits in your community.
