“My community values organizing and stands for the inclusion of voices: we're stronger united.”
SAN BERNARDINO, UNITED STATES
JUNE 2024 | 53 PORTRAITS
As a lifelong resident of San Bernardino, I’ve witnessed the hardships my city has endured which has motivated me to get involved and contribute towards uplifting the community. Moreover, as an artist and organizer, I stand with those who have been disproportionately impacted by the city’s poor leadership, bankruptcy, and limited resources. My experiences have led me towards developing the Los Rxstros project, which focuses on the representation of my community. Los Rxstros stems from the combination of two Spanish words, which are used to represent the faces (rostros) and traces (rastros) of my community. A major component of Los Rxstros is to identify the concerns of San Bernardino residents, while amplifying their voices within public spaces. This project represents my community through the use of portraits, which is supplemented with interview write-ups that are shared online. This action is important because it's an opportunity to draw attention to the needs of my community which are often overlooked. The use of portraiture allows the community to engage with the information by allowing them to relate to the participants. The goal of this project is to expose people to other community members who may share their struggle, but ultimately to humanize each other in a way that builds community. With Los Rxstros, I hope to spark conversations and inspire my community to share their voices to enact change.
