Through art, we empower and give hope to the homeless to realize their self worth and that they truly matter.
In my experience, there is plenty of validation that art's self expression transforms & strengthens our self esteem. As a former university professor of art and elementary school teacher who taught reading & creative writing through art, I saw astounding results in my students in the areas of personal enlivenment, motivation and inner strength. My third graders, many who did not speak English, excelled in their progress through making expressive art. followed by storytelling & learning to write their compelling stories, went from being "illiterate", to jumping ahead three grade levels in reading competency in one year.
In children's art, it is clear that our innate cry, "I AM", acknowledges our human existence as important. It is time to restore this innate gift of creativity to those who suffer from the invalidation of homelessness. In a seemingly unfriendly world, creative self expression restores young and old alike to their original self image as sacred and valued human beings.
