The Venetian lagoon is an environment which uniquely sets the stage for a discussion on global issues; simultaneously it’s a city with a vulnerability that can support the articulation of how increasingly severe these problems are becoming. The violent impact of mass tourism and gentrification to the urban and social landscape is becoming increasingly blatant and generates a constant loss of more and more residents. Entire buildings are being sold off with the intention of developing more hotels and the uncontrollable growth of demand has resulted in a substantial conversion of the economic and commercial presence in the city, leaving the citizens whit no services.
In this scenario, we think that the curative power of art can have long-term effects on social and environmental dynamics. The word “care” can be understood both as “therapy” and prevention of a possible future disease: by spreading the stories of people who keep living in the city they love despite the difficulties, Handle with Care aims to raise awareness on the risk of cultural impoverishment the city of Venice is facing.
