I was teaching an after school enrichment digital photography class at Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School. My students were primarily black and latino and ranged in age from 10-14. The neighborhood where the school is located in South Williamsburg Brooklyn is primarily Hassidic and many of my students also live nearby. They often expressed that they don't feel very welcome in their own neighborhood, and this is why I thought it would be interesting and empowering to do this project with them. Unfortunately it was difficult to gain permission from local store owners, etc...to paste the posters, and it turned out that trying to paste them in the street without permission was definitely not welcome.
