The aim of this project was to connect two different realities that share the same neighborhood: Rocinha, the largest favela in Brazil, and PUC, the major private university in Rio de Janeiro.
Every year a group of students from the Department of Arts & Design from PUC travels abroad to learn about and explore the design field. In January 2014 the students traveled to New York City and had the pleasure of visiting JR’studio.
After such a remarkable experience, one of the students from the group, Davison Coutinho, born and raised in Rocinha, felt the need to give something back to his community. So, Davison chose the locality “199” in Rocinha, only 1 mile away from the university, to install the portraits; it was the first time the other students - who had traveled miles to visit New York - entered the favela.
Become a Group Leader by organizing an Inside Out Action in your community. Gather 50 or more participants that stand behind a message you are passionate about and paste your portraits in your community.
