“Young people are often left out of important discussions, now's the time to amplify their voices!”
YOUTH SUPPORT BLACK LIVES MATTER
WOODBURY, UNITED STATES
MARCH 2022 | 100 PORTRAITS
Woodbury, NJ is a small, suburban town, in the shadow of Philadelphia. Its 2 square miles are home to a diverse population of nearly 10,000 residents, 53% of which are White, 28% of which are Black or African American. Like a lot of small towns, Woodbury has had its history of separatism, but when needed Woodbury shines as one united community. June 6, 2020, was one such occasion.
As towns around America and the world at large, responded to the death of George Floyd, a few citizens of Woodbury put a plan into motion. A small rally and march were to take place, assuming a couple hundred people might participate, but on the day of the event a crowd of thousands assembled. The turnout was unexpected, and the passion of the community was only magnified.
Inspired by that event, members of the nonprofit, the South Jersey Artist Collective wanted to elevate the voices of the youth who participated in the event in Woodbury and in surrounding towns. One such youth is now a board member for the group, while other board members saw their students, their children, and family friends get involved with the cause.
We want the world to know that we stand with Black Lives Matter, and the youth of today will continue the fight well into the future.
