The Barrios Altos represent an area with high heritage value for the Historic Center of Lima, which, after the expansion of the Abancay Avenue in 1940, was segregated from the power nucleus that the areas surrounding the main square represented. Because of this, the area started to gradually degrade until it became what it is now, a ghetto of poverty and precariousness. The Plaza Italia is currently the entrance to the Barrios Altos as well as an area where there is an interrelation between its residents and the floating population that surrounds the central market, which daily houses people from all corners of the city. The Plaza Italia permanently invites foreigners to become acquainted, go into and discover the magic that this old area of Lima still keeps within, and with it, its living heritage through its people, its traditions and customs, which still last after almost 500 years.
We want to present it on the 18th of January because it is the anniversary of the city of Lima.
