The State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the Galeria Providência Project, which has its headquarters in the favela that is considered the oldest in Brazil, participate in this Inside Out action to carry out an artistic intervention in the community, through the technique of lambe-lambe, producing portraits of residents that will be pasted on its walls (which form the “skin” of this favela). UERJ and Galeria Providência have carried out a cartography of the community, traveling through streets and alleys and interviewing local inhabitants, who tell their stories and memories through narratives, performances and other artistic actions. Such protagonists assume the role of a(r)tivists, highlighting the different forms of art and politics that are produced on a daily basis, as resistance tactics to circumvent the verticality of strategies that have historically belittled the history and lives of the favela. The objective of this action is to contribute to giving visibility to these faces and bodies that live in Providência, through images and audiovisual records, enabling other perceptions about the region. Exchanges between the city and the university are essential to reduce distances and expand the exchange of knowledge that comes with everyday life and the knowledge that comes from scientific rigor. Community agents, favela residents, students and teachers from UERJ will establish direct exchanges during the process of producing the images, cartography and documentary. It is also expected that this project will contribute to the development of public policies that can help improve the economic reality and quality of life of residents of the Providência favela.
