New Sudanese Communities in Brooklyn- Abdalla & his Family
Althought it was Ramadan and they were fasting, Abdalla and his family graciously invited me into their home to share an afternoon and some conversation. He told me about his life in Sudan, how he met his wife and the friends and family that he left behind, and that despite the horrible violence he loves his homeland.
Here in New York Abdalla is a hard working cab driver it is how he supports his wife, his aunt and Hope, his daughter. But Abdalla is also a talented artist, it is his first love, after his family. He shared with me a number of his beautiful paintings. Some were of traditional life in Sudan and others more contemporary, like the two portraits that he said speaks to his love for his new home in the USA, one is of Abraham Lincoln and the other is of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Truly Inspiring.
